Chemical Mechanical Engineer

Craft Recruiting

This is a Full-time position in Kirkland, WA posted April 28, 2021.

Your Expertise + Our Technology will decarbonize the planet We’ve combined expertise in meta materials, artificial intelligence, and deep technology to develop paper-thin heat-to-electricity generators using waste heat from household boilers and furnaces.  The result is highly reliable, low cost, renewable power. We are in search of an Engineer with mixed skills in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering.  As our Chemical Engineer for Reactor Design you will optimize lab scale chemical reactors including the burner design, fine solids handling, plant design and layout. Over $40 million in venture capital has been committed to our products which will help decarbonize the planet.  We have over five years of development and are growing the team to begin commercialization.  3 Awesome reasons to work here:Top Funding from prominent investors and partnersOpportunity to join top team of Physicists and Engineers from Multiple DisciplinesTop benefits and options as we move to commercialization  Details: You will work collaboratively on a team of highly skilled PhDs, Physicists, Chemical, Optical, Electrical and Materials engineers.  You will design, fabricate, and test lab scale chemical reactors and contribute to our design choices.

Particular focus will be on chemical reactor design, plant design and layout, CFD, growth models, fine solids handling, burner design, optimization of chemical reactor geometry, and integration of the reactor with the balance of system. You will work with high temperature materials (think ceramic components under stress) and design components using thermal and mechanical FEA analysis. Responsibilities include:
•              Serve as the first mechanical engineer on an intrapreneurial team to develop or adapt chemical reactor technologies for an innovative new product.
•              Perform calculations to inform chemical reactor and plant design (e.g.

chemical reactor rates, fluid dynamics inside the reactor, heat and mass balance, plant design, etc.)
•              Perform material selection and check for compatibility and long-term reliability for a high temperature system (such as: burner design and selection, insulation materials, ceramic and refractory components, cyclones, vacuum)
•              Perform hands-on prototyping and validation measurements.
•              Establish a new core competency in chemical reactor development.
•              Ensure workplace safety during laboratory experiments.
•              Perform first order hand calculations of the analysis tasks prior to conducting FEA analysis
•              Perform tolerance analysis to ensure intended assembly performance
•              Design experiments, conduct laboratory testing and utilize lab and field test data to verify designs against requirements and validate analytical models
•              Perform first-order hand calculations and CFD/FEA to model component and subsystem performance, including mechanical stress analysis, flow and heat transfer analysis, steady-state and transient analysis, etc.
•              Create fabrication drawings for component/sub-system and other mechanical assemblies   What you need for this Position:Because of the creative thinking required for this role, we believe you should have a master’s degree or higher in Chemcial or Mechanical Engineering or related.  In some cases, a Bachelor’s degree and the appropriate experience will satisfy this requirement.  Designed and brought a new chemical reactor technology from concept to functional prototype or pilot test.

Deep fundamental and applied understanding of the mechanical aspects of chemical reactor and chemical plant design with respect to heat and mass balance, mechanical stresses, thermal cycling, plant component design, selection, and qualification, and heat transfer.

Experience developing high temperature chemical processing systems such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), hydrogen processing, steam methane reforming, water gas shift reactors, syngas, coke, or hydrogen production, or similar.

Experience with chemical process design and analysis, using both hand-calculations, CAD, CFD, and/or process simulation software such as Ansys, COMSOL, Solidworks, SPYRO, or similar.

Hands-on experience as the mechanical/thermal expert on a team developing and testing laboratory scale chemical reactors.

3+ years experience in a commercial/industrial setting that included implementing your mechanical designs in a chemical reactor and  prototype troubleshooting, ideally in a startup company.

Enthusiasm to move fast, break rules, adapt quickly, and work collaboratively with a strong team.

In addition to a highly competitive salary ($100-$150K plus) and a generous benefits package including 100% funded insurance, you will also be granted early-stage internal equity.  Your hard work will also qualify you for a Flexible working schedule and Flexible time-off. Key deadlines and milestones await your contributions.  So, if you are a Chemical/Mechanical/Reactor Design Engineer, please apply today.
