PORT TOWNSEND SCHOOL DISTRICTHuman Resources Position Opening Announcement: 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher (Grade Levels K-5)Salish Coast Elementary2021-2022 School YearPosting Date: May 25, 2021 Posting No. 2021-16QUALIFICATIONSHold a current Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement.Demonstrated special education teaching experience.Support PBIS, RTI and MTSS systems as a collaborator, consultant and interventionist.Take a leadership role school-wide in data-based decision making, universal screening systems, progress monitoring and providing support to students in a multi-tiered system of intervention.Knowledge and experience teaching students with various disabilities, including severe emotional/behavioral disabilities.Knowledge and experience conducting parent meetings; writing and implementing IEPs and specific behavior plans; use of assessment measures, data collection, case management, record keeping and report writing; implementing direct instruction programs and specially designed curriculum.Knowledge and experience with inclusionary models of service delivery.Develop schedules for special education students and paraeducators in consultation with the principal.Assist the principal in developing training for educational assistants in the core curriculum areas.Knowledge of the legal requirements of Special Education.Knowledge and experience with regular education curricula and Common Core State Standards, and the ability to modify such for special needs students.Knowledge and experience with current research and instructional “best practices.”Ability to provide physical assistance and physical restraint when indicated in accordance with students’ behavior plans and within the parameters of the law.Outstanding communication skills, flexibility, ability to work in teams, and sense of humor.Demonstrated skill and competence in computer skills, awareness of technology for use in the classroom, and familiarity with assistive hardware and software.Demonstrated compatibility with fellow staff members, students and parents.Demonstrated ability to contribute to total school program, to work collaboratively with colleagues, and a commitment to achieve school goals and objectives.Knowledge and experience with project or place-based learning preferred. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIESProvide Special Education support as indicated by the MDT and IEPs to identified students in their least restrictive settings.Work in partnership with parents and classroom teachers on IEP development and implementation to achieve maximum student success.Provide support to identified students to maintain appropriate behavior and safety in the school environment by establishing discipline guidelines and behavior plans, evaluation, assisting students to gain self-control, and utilizing physical restraint only as a last resort and according to guidelines.Collaborate with other team members on the MDT to complete referrals, assessments, make recommendations, design intervention plans and coordinate the implementation of plans.Collaborate with Special Education staff (including itinerant providers and paraprofessionals) to provide quality educational programs for identified students, assess and monitor student progress, evaluate and modify programs, teach direct instruction groups, conduct IEPs, develop work schedules, train paraeducators, facilitate team meetings, and demonstrate flexibility in working in a changing educational environment.Collaborate with the school staff to design and implement IEPs in an inclusive setting which accounts for Least Restrictive Environment and may include planning, teaching, co-teaching, providing resources, modifying curriculum, and managing behavior plans.Collaborate with other support services such as Title 1/LAP, Counseling, Community Counseling, other community agencies, medical personnel, and other special education support personnel.Participate in the implementation, assessment, and evaluation of the inclusionary practices and universal design for learning.Plan and provide for the transition of students moving between programs.Participate in staff functions, committees, and meetings.Participate in the Problem Solving Team, which has the purpose of intensifying interventions for students who are not making expected progress.Collaborate with school staff to plan and deliver Maritime and place-based learning in alignment with the district’s mission and vision.
