JOB DESCRIPTIONThis job description defines the tasks and responsibilities normally expected of the Perioperative Registered Nurse, but it should be understood that it is not all inclusive and is subject to change by the Surgery Services Supervisor or the Director of Patient Care Services.The Perioperative RN will assess, plan, implement and evaluate the patient and care needed from admission through discharge, provide comprehensive patient care, act as a resource person for the patient, family and non-professional staff. The RN is responsible for delegating appropriate responsibilities to the Scrub Tech.The Perioperative RN works with the supervisor to develop and implement policies and procedures. She/he is also responsible for restocking supplies, cleaning equipment and contributing to the efficient use of financial resources.He/she has frequent contact with and often handles sensitive information regarding patient and hospital business and must maintain confidentiality of that information. He/she must act as an ambassador of public relations for the hospital and the community including patients, families, visitors and other organizations.SPESIFICATIONSForecasts needs for special equipment and supplies for specific procedures coordinating activity with Surgery Services Supervisor.Utilizes knowledge of skills in Perioperative Nursing procedures as a basis for implementing patient care.Coordinates use and care of equipment effectively.Organizes own time effectively.Identifies patient, surgeon and staff needs and sets priorities accordingly by communicating, in a pleasant manner, with all involved personnel.Adheres to standards of care, department objectives and individual objectives.Follows the hospital and nursing department policies and procedures.Identifies deficiencies in patient care and initiates corrective action.Participates on appropriate committeesCheck narcotics at beginning of shift with another RN.· Verifies operative procedure via consent form, patient’s statement and surgeon’s verification.Provides emotional needs during transfer by verbal communication, touch, or comfort measures.Insures proper body temperature positioning according to surgery needs. Bone prominence, etc., are protectively padded.Notes color and condition of skin as to rashes, bruises, lesions, turgor, or prior incisions and documents on record.Reports abnormal diagnostic studies findings to anesthesiologist and/or surgeon.Determines mobility of body parts by patient’s statement or range of motion.Identifies and records presence of internal/external prosthesis/implants.Verifies allergies to medication or chemicals by patient statement or chart H & P and relates findings to other staff.Communicates and documents physiological/psychosocial status data by verbal report and patient record.Assesses vital signs, sensory impairments if present.Assesses for perception, expectation of care and coping mechanism pertaining to procedure.Identifies cultural practices and religious beliefs and how to integrate them into the patient care plan.Confirms identity of patient by means of chart check, verbally from the patient and reading armband.Provides emotional needs during transfer by verbal communication, touch, or comfort measures.Insures proper body temperature positioning according to surgery needs. Bone prominence, etc., are protectively padded.Organizes nursing activities in a logical sequence (i.e. ground pad placement prior to draping).Completes a nursing assessment to identify individualized patient needs and problems.Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care plan to meet the individualized needs of the patient.Prepares the incision site according to the established procedure.Anticipates and fulfills the requirements of the Scrub RN/Technician and the surgical team.Provides assistance to the surgeon and anesthesiologist as necessary.Identifies and communicates any change in the patient’s condition to the health care team.Uses principles of aseptic practice in varying situations and initiates corrective action if breaks in technique occur.Inspects sterile items for contamination prior to opening and maintains sterility while opening for procedure.Initiates and follows established policies and procedures for sponge and Sharps counts.Initiates corrective action when counts are incorrect according to hospital policy and procedure.Assures all equipment is functioning before use.Operates mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.Removes malfunctioning equipment from use and completes an occurrence report immediately.Follows through with occurrence reporting when an unusual incident happens.Prepares for potential emergencies by having crash cart, etc., available. Administers, communicates, and documents drugs/solutions given during procedure.Adheres to blood administration according to hospital policy.Adheres to the OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen guidelines.Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures.Ensures proper techniques and standards of care are maintained.Identifies, labels, and dispatches specimens to laboratory per established procedure.Controls environment within the suite via traffic control, temperature/humidity, sensory stimuli, and clean/safe and anatomical aspects of the surgical procedures assigned.Coordinates use of supplies and equipment for use during a procedure. (i.e. scheduling conflicts and availability)Exercises safe judgement in decision making through past experience and assessments.Selects appropriate transfer and transportation needs by patient acuity, size, and number of personnel available.Communicates with PACU RN any pertinent information prior to patient leaving the surgical suite (if present).Practices within ethical and legal guidelines.Maintains accurate records of all perioperative patient care following established policies and procedures.Completes all documentation in a legible and accurate manner.Provides Business Office with an accurate accounting of patient chargesDirects and assists with in-between case clean up and proceeds with preparation for the next case.Constantly and consistently updates Surgeon’s Preference Card.Assures that cases for the following day’s cases are prepared prior to leaving the department for the day.Demonstrates tact and understanding when dealing with patients, team members, and ancillary staff.Supervises and directs patient care and personnel to provide continuity of care and to meet the needs of the patientDemonstrates tact and understanding when dealing with patients, team members, members of other disciplines, and the public.Demonstrates flexibility/adaptability to changes in nursing practice Participates in teaching and orienting co-workers within the suite.Participates in the mentoring and orienting of nursing students during their rotation.Assists in new product evaluation and gives input to the supervisor.Functions within designated dress code and personal hygiene.Exhibits an enthusiastic, optimistic attitude.Supports and interprets the hospital’s philosophy, objectives, and policies.Participates in activities that will assist nursing and the hospital’s administration to provide ongoing improvement in patient care services.Adheres to the “Code for Profession Nurses” 2, State Registered Nurse Practice Act, Patient Care Standards of Practice, and the Hospital’s Policies and Procedures.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIESReports for scheduled shift on time and prepared to assume responsibilities.Reports to work in proper uniform/attire.Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time.Varies work schedule to meet the needs of the department.Ensures the department manager has approved all scheduled overtime.Seek supervisor approval before working beyond scheduled hours that will result in overtime.Schedules all time off with supervisor’s approval.Strictly adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policies 100% of the time.Performs all duties as assigned.Wears I.D. badge in a visible location at all times on hospital property.Protects I.D. and access badge and reports any issues or loss immediately to supervisor or to the Human Resource Department.Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for information communicated at meetings and in email.Attends all mandatory in service on a timely basis as scheduled.Participates as an active team member at staff meetings.Reads communications and acts upon in a positive and informative manner.Responds to all training/recertification notices timely and adequate knowledge of safety policies and procedures, the use of MSDS sheets, hazardous material procedures, and safety codes.Respond appropriately to any Codes while working any shift (Code Blue, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Amber, Code Red, Code Orange, and Rapid Response Team).Demonstrates adequate knowledge of security issues, i.e. personal protection, protection of personal and hospital property.Be familiar with and comply with the Mid-Valley Hospital & Clinic Personnel Handbook and Policies.Be familiar with the collective bargaining agreement (Union Contract) of the UFCW21 and Mid-Valley Hospital.Demonstrates the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.Non-Clinical Personnel: This position has no responsibility for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients. However, the ability to communicate and interact with patients of all ages is required.POSITION QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION:Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.ACLS required, will have 1 year to obtain ACLS from date of hire.Completed an approved course or on the job training.EXPERIENCE:Nursing experience that has provided opportunities to refine competencies in nursing practice and the application of administrative principles.The Perioperative RN must be a registered nurse graduated from an accredited school of nursing, and must have a minimum of 2 years nursing experience in a hospital setting; perioperative experience strongly preferred. He/she must demonstrate professional behavior. They must participate in continuing education and demonstrate motivation for continued self-improvement. CPR required. Nursing experience that has provided opportunities to refine competencies in nursing practice and the application of administrative principles.General knowledge of instructional skills, work simplification methods, skill analysis, and group dynamics.Progressive leadership experience.REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:Current state nursing licensure.OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:Ability to communicate clearly and effectively: delegate and coordinate through leadership skills.Ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels; i.e. patients, families, employees, physicians, etc.CAREER PATH: Surgical Suite Manager, Director of Patient Care ServicesPERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Standard equipment required.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSMay be required to work any shift in emergencies.May be required to work any day of the week.Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects or hold instruments.WORKING CONDITIONSThis person spends 95% of their time in temperature controlled office space. The potential for exposure to biohazardous agents or exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potential infectious agents is high. This position requires contact with patients and staff under a wide variety of circumstances. This person is subject to varying and unpredictable situations, many interruptions, long irregular hours, multiple calls and inquires, and on-call status.One or more of the following conditions affect the respiratory system or the skin. Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
