Manager of Non-Destructive Testing Engineers

Blue Origin

This is a Full-time position in Kent, WA posted April 9, 2021.

As a part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will oversee the Non-Destructive testing of flight hardware for various spaceflight systems.

If you share our passions and vision, thrive in a dynamic startup environment, excel on integrated cross-functional teams, are experienced and skilled in several relevant technologies (even perhaps not in the aerospace industry), continuously seek out opportunities to learn and improve, enjoy occasional travel, and do not allow title or job description limit the depth or breadth of your contributions, then we would love to hear from you.Additional responsibilities include:This position is responsible for directing the daily activities related to execution of the NDT Engineering group.This position is responsible for the performance of NDT personnel in supporting all current and future program needs across all business unitsThis position monitors current and future potential NDT Engineering projects and actively assists or provides direction to assign the correct resources to complete the task(s).Manage budget planning and execution of potentially $6-8 Million Capital asset budgetManage budget planning and execution of potentially $1 Million Operating budgetWithin the qualification(s) of the method this manager is certified, this manager will designate up to 50% of their time to work technical projects within the NDT scopeManage and grow the Non-Destructive Engineering team, including developing resource plans and profiles, authorizing job descriptions, conducting interviews, making hiring recommendations, assigning tasks, and conducting performance reviews and developing team members.Set priorities and completion milestones for the Engineering team projects and activitiesManage the Engineering tasks for specialized non-destructive testing of production hardware in order to guarantee achievement of on time delivery, cost and qualityTroubleshoot, diagnose, and correct equipment malfunctions by modification, rework, repair, and/or maintenance.

Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for recurrence controlSetup new production areas, including layouts, tooling and equipment validationAssist in the transition from development to production, including qualification schedules and first articles.Develop and maintain NDT group qualification and certifications.Work with and collaborate with multiple NDT groups throughout the United States within Blue OriginPerform second party verifications and hardware inspections to engineering models, drawings, specifications, and written proceduresAssure continued training and skills development to attract, develop, and retain great peopleForecast and developing recovery plans for constraints critical to vehicle delivery schedule.Identify and implement continuous improvement projects for area safety and job efficiency.Other duties as assigned or otherwise beneficial to fulfilling the mission and vision.We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Passion for our mission and vision is requiredQualifications:Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science discipline and at least 15 years of related experience in Quality/Manufacturing/NDT processes (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).Hands-on working experience in a manufacturing environment and a corresponding understanding of manufacturing processesKnowledge of robotic inspection and data acquisition in a 3D software environment.Demonstrated proficiency with a variety of NDT inspection techniques and equipment, along with a working knowledge of blueprint reading and interpretationKnowledge of industry NDT standards (ex.

NAS410, NASA-STD-5009, ASTM E164, ASTM 1742, ASTM 1417, AMS-STD-2154, etc…)Experience managing a budget to meet organizational financial goalsExperience in at least three of the following NDT methods: Radiography (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Penetrant Inspection (PT), Eddy Current (ET), Shearography (ST) or Infrared (IR).The ideal candidate would have/maintain multiple ASNT Level 3 certifications; RT, UT and PT preferred.Experience with AS9100 certification (or similar)Strong leadership, problem solving, and written/verbal communication skillsAbility to analyze, evaluate and develop solutions to a variety of situations (technical, organizational, etc.)Experience with MS Office productsCandidates should possess the skills to coach/mentor individuals to work effectively under time and budget constraints.Exceptional organizational and analytical skills and a proven ability to drive complex projects with minimal oversightMust be a U.S.

citizen or national, U.S.

permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S.

as a refugee or granted asylum.Desired:Experience with auditing practices and Process CertificationBroad/deep scheduling and planning skillsetExperience with large project controlsExperience with project planning and Master Schedule integrationProficiency with resource loaded schedules using Primavera (P6), Open Plan, MS Project, or other softwareExperienced in handling large aerospace componentsExperienced in a team-based Lean Manufacturing environmentExperience with the manufacturing/inspection of composite structures, Friction Stir Welds (FSW), GTAW weldments, Additive Manufacturing and Thermal Protection Systems.ITAR RequirementsTo conform to U.S.

Government commercial space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), 8 U.S.C.
