This positionsupervises a 3-person crew, directs the performance of physical and technical field survey tasks necessary to complete the assignment. This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that occur within 90 days of the closing of this position.

(This excludes Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Corrections) Responsibilities: Essential Duties:Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Survey Crew in performing field survey work for boundary surveys, section subdivision surveys and topographic surveys.

Directs the crew on how to accomplish the particular survey task.

Interprets deeds, plats, surveys, and land corner records to locate monuments in the field and verifies their identity.

Instructs crew members on the field survey procedures, proper use of equipment and recording of field notes.

Reviews field measurements and notes for accuracy. Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Survey Crew in performing field construction surveys.

Interprets the location of construction features from plans and calculates the horizontal and vertical positions of those features.

Directs the crew on how to accomplish the particular construction feature layout.

Interprets plans and specifications to determine the proper layout for construction features.

Instructs crew members on the field survey procedures, proper use of equipment and recording of field notes.

Reviews field measurements, construction stakes and notes for accuracy. Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Survey Crew in performing field as-built surveys.

Locates construction features in the field and identifies changes from plans and accurately documents the location those features. Organizes equipment and materials.

Ensures that adequate materials are available for the assigned survey task.

Cleans, maintains, and calibrates survey instruments.

Evaluates instruments and makes recommendations for purchase of new or replacement instruments. Other duties required.

(required duty statement) Qualifications:Education and Experience: Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Civil Engineering, Surveying or related field and 4 years of responsible surveying experience or the equivalent combinations of education and experience to perform the essential duties of the position. Required: Valid State of Washington Driver’s License and proof of insurance, if requested Preferred: State of Washington Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyor’s Land Surveyor in Training Certification. This position is a Local #1 position. Equipment Used:Total Station survey instruments and data collectors, GPS receivers, tape measures, automatic levels, metal detectors, copy/fax/scanner, cameras, radios, cellular telephones, passenger automobile.

Computer software including AutoCAD and other survey related programs.

Working Conditions:Environment: Excessive noise, Exposure to weather, Extreme temperatures, Moving/mechanical parts, Vibration, Natural hazards including insects, venomous snakes, irritating vegetation, unstable terrain.Physical Demands: Carrying, Lifting, Pulling, Pushing, Reaching, Sitting, Standing, Walking, Balancing, Climbing, Crawling, Crouching, Kneeling, Talking, Visual Acuity.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects or work out in the field.

Knowledge:Knowledge of modern surveying methods, practices, and techniques as they relate to boundary, topographic and construction surveys.Knowledge of civil engineering techniques for road construction; horizontal and vertical control standards.Knowledge of GIS concepts and practices; operation of surveying instruments and Global Positioning Systems.Knowledge in the use of personal or workstation computers, including Microsoft Office, graphics software, AutoCAD software and Civil 3D software.Knowledge of policies and procedures for the county, state, and federal levels; quality control procedures.
