Transportation Systems Technician – Electrical

Washington State

This is a Full-time position in Yakima, WA posted May 19, 2021.

Description **About WSDOT** Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state.

In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world’s longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world’s widest tunneling project.

**The Opportunity** WSDOT is currently seeking a senior-level technician who has the ambition and skills to support the vast electrical infrastructure of Washington State’s South Central Region.

The Signal shop located in Union Gap is currently seeking to hire an experienced technician to assist with maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing highway lighting, traffic signal systems, and ITS assets throughout the Region.

This Region-wide position is critical in ensuring that our traffic signals and electrical equipment are operating at their best to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round.

**What to Expect** Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will: * Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform preventive maintenance on illumination systems, electrical services, traffic signals, variable message signs, traffic cameras, road & weather information systems, highway advisory radios, flashing beacons and school zone advisory equipment.

* Ensure repairs are compliant with all NEC codes and WSDOT specifications.

* Work from the ground and from man lift vehicles up to 60 feet.

* Identify circuit wiring with megger, tone tracer, power tracer, induction field tracer, locator, and metal detector.

* Troubleshoot and repair equipment and circuit problems employing various pieces of common electrical and electronic test equipment.

* Locate underground utilities and perform electrical inspections for Project and Construction offices.

* Conduct daily and weekly inspections.

* Attend monthly safety meetings and safety classes as required.

* Prepare traffic control plans for review and approval by supervisor and traffic section of regional headquarters.

* Troubleshoot systems and equipment for Facilities and Equipment Mechanics, including electrical construction for remodels and system enhancements in accordance with all applicable standards and codes.

* Maintain records of maintenance activities, equipment used, and inventory consumption.

* Traverse various ground surface conditions, including kneeling, bending, pulling and reaching (i.e.

slopes, ditches, gravel, guardrails, etc.).

* Use tools and test equipment standard to the electrical/electronic industry.

**Qualifications** The Hiring Authority wishes to hire at the Transportation Systems Technician (TST) D Level, however, in absence of qualified candidates at the TST D level, others will be considered at the TST C Level.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are _required_ at each level: Transportation Systems Technician C: * Valid driver’s license, and ability to obtain CDL Class B within six months of hire.

Agency will assist.

* Four (4) years of electrical construction experience, to include industrial/commercial construction experience.

Transportation Systems Technician D: * Valid driver’s license, with ability to obtain CDL Class B within six months of hire.

Agency will assist.

* Six (6) years of electrical construction experience, to include experience installing and maintaining traffic signal and illumination fields, or ITS equipment.

In addition to the above qualifications, following are also required at any level: * Current Washington State EL-01 Journey Level Electrical License.

* High School Graduation or GED.

* The ability to interpret, understand, and work with computer hardware and software for many various applications and/or equipment.

* The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions at all times of the day and night during the year.

* The ability to complete WSDOT Flagger and First Aid training and certification.

* The availability to be subject to a 24-hour stand-by shift on a rotational basis, emergency call out and shift changes as needed.

* A Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

* Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50lbs from one location to another in safe manner.

* Proven skills to communicate effectively.

It is _preferred_ that qualified candidates also have: * Four (4) years’ experience installing and maintaining traffic signals, highway lighting, and ITS equipment.

* Relevant experience working out of a bucket truck around traffic and setting up traffic control to the M54-44.

* Knowledge of IT networking principles and communication equipment.

* Experience using tools for locating underground utilities.

* Computer skills with the ability to write work reports and cost estimates, input time, program devices using specialized software, and respond to internal/external customers **Important Notes ** * This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
