Scientist / Engineer, Formulations & Process
– Controls who will join our R&D team in Marysville, OH.

This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH.

Reporting to a R&D Product Development Lead in the Controls Category, the Senior Scientist/Engineer will support new processes, formulations and product development from bench-top experiments scaling to commercial product launch.

The Sr Scientist/Engineer will conduct research, prepare formulations, conduct laboratory tests, analyze results and prepare the appropriate documentation.

The candidate will play a critical role bringing new innovation and in the development of liquid and granular technologies in a broad range of consumer pest control products including but not limited to insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and a strong focus on natural and organic products.

The Scientist/Engineer will create raw material and formulation specifications within Scotts Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) documentations system.

The Scientist/Engineer will be responsible for finding new technologies, developing new products and processes, and identifying cost savings opportunities within the current portfolio of products.

The Scientist/Engineer will constantly pair relevant technologies with consumer needs in order to develop innovative products that meet consumer needs and the needs of the business.

This Scientist/Engineer will help build our business strategy by providing thoughtful leadership on granular and liquid formulation technologies that can be applied to sustainable consumer products by developing commercially viable formulations.

The candidate will interact directly with Packaging Development, Biology, Marketing, Sourcing, Regulatory and Supply Chain in order to facilitate these activities.

What you’ll do in this role:

Develop commercially-valuable formulations and shepherd new processes to production scale in support of the consumer lawn & garden business.

Generates, documents, and reports data as necessary for product registration and production specifications.

Collaborates closely with colleagues to ensure alignment on project goals and maximize efficient use of resources versus milestones and commercialization schedules. 

Provide direction and support for scale-up from laboratory bench top to pilot plant to full production.

Identify and promote proprietary formulation and process opportunities and strategies via collaboration with R&D and Operations.

Communicates project status and results in written technical reports and oral presentations to R&D, Operations, and the Business Units.

Works closely with marketing, operations and other business units to develop robust business cases in support of projects.

Assists Operations and Contract Manufacturing with implementation of new or revised formulations through training of manufacturing staff and on-site technical coverage of the initial production campaign.

What you’ll need to be successful:

Masters or PhD Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field preferred (or BS with sufficient experience).

Minimum 7 to 10 years industrial experience with strong background in formulations, ideally including liquids, powders and/or granular formulations.

Experience with formulation scale-up principles and challenges.

Knowledge of bulk liquid and solids handling.

Direct experience with formulation characterization methods, e.g., chromatography, viscosity, particle size, flash point, solubility.

Awareness of 5S and Six Sigma principles strongly beneficial

Scientific curiosity and rigor.

Interest in lawn care, horticulture, and/or gardening is a plus.

Networking skills to build support systems and seek out new technologies.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
