Staff Engineer I – Opportunity for Working Remotely

Dell

This is a Full-time position in Burien, WA posted May 6, 2021.

The Elevator Pitch: Why would you enjoy this new opportunity?

Enterprises are running mission critical software in more places than ever before — in their datacenter, hybrid cloud, public cloud, and at the edge.??In order to catalyze Enterprise transformation through?software, VMware envisions a world where Kubernetes?is as available as a utility ? like electricity ? customers need to deploy a consistent Kubernetes grid across all their operational environments.

Tanzu?Kubernetes Grid (TKG) provides Enterprise organizations with a consistent, upstream compatible, Kubernetes substrate across SDDC, Public Cloud, and Edge environments that is ready for end-user workloads and ecosystem integrations. TKG builds on trusted open source and community projects and delivers an engineered and supported Kubernetes platform for end users and partners.?

What is the?primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

You will be a part of the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Core team, working as a Staff I engineer with an impactful and motivated team of engineers. You will be effectively working and collaborating from distributed locations to deliver TKG Core and TKG releases on time with good quality. You will be leading components design and implementation of TKG Test Platform. The role partners with product managers, engineering managers from TKG teams. Effectively communicates with many types of audiences. Facilitates collaboration and communication to ensure all perspectives are heard and considered.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

As a Staff I engineer, you will be expected to:

  • Provide technical support and hands-on work for the team that will focus on building TKG with your deep technical skills across both proprietary and open-source, and a good breadth across many technologies.

  • Unblocks team by resolving key technical challenges with your knowledge spanning multiple platforms and architecture with deep understanding of Kubernetes.

  • Design and develop the component and features of the TKG Test Platform.

  • Align upstream and downstream release effort to ship TKG efficiently

What type of work will you be doing? What?assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Most of time will be spent on working with product managers, engineering manager and workstream tech lead and team members to translate requirements into design and functional specs, provide technical guidance for the team members and solve critical technical problems.

  • You will help to build and adopt development process to enhance productivity and efficiency.

  • You will need to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Participate and influence code reviews, design reviews.

  • You will also work closely on convergence with TKGS and TKGm deliverables as well.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Kaiting Chen who manages the infrastructure, test platform, and image builder teams for the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) product. My management style relies heavily on leveraging the diverse and varied experiences of those on my teams and encouraging independent though and out of the box thinking. I believe that my approach is due to my own nontraditional journey: I studied biomedical engineering and economics, started in software as a technical support engineer, continued on a sales engineer, came to VMware as a software engineer, and became an engineering manager over time. To this end I tend to take a hands off approach on my teams, letting them decide for themselves what to work on and the best approach to take.

This role is on the TKG test platform team. Currently that team is composed of six engineers that work with in a very collaborative environment and split their attention upstream and downstream.
