Transportation Planning Specialist 1

About WSDOTWashington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state.

In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world’s longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world’s widest tunneling project.

The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking a dedicated and highly motivated individual to fill an entry-level position as a Transportation Planning Specialist 1 in Spokane, WA.

This position will assist the Eastern Region Planning Office in developing and maintaining the community engagement events/outreach for the North Spokane Corridor Place-making and region-wide engagement efforts.

You will also perform a variety of planning duties such as collecting and analyzing traffic data, performing geographic information systems (GIS) data collection and analysis, and preparing various materials for use in corridor sketches, community engagement, corridor studies, literature research and other supporting documents.

The top candidate must be someone who is willing to learn and grow in the profession. What to ExpectThis is a non-permanent opportunity, expected to last 12 months.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:Assist with developing and implementing various community engagement efforts.Collaborate with local agencies, stakeholders, and neighborhood organizations in implementing community engagement processes.

Prepare and attend community meetings and workshops.Provide geographic information system (GIS) data and preliminary analysis; compile data; prepare various materials such as charts, graphs, sketches, maps, diagrams, and exhibits; reproduce prints; and assist with various planning analysis processes.

Assist with multi-modal data collection and analysis; provide data collection summary and validation.Collect, summarize, and refine other data relating to community impact assessment including social, economic, and environmental factors relating to transportation systems.Participate in the development of various preliminary transportation planning studies, route development, corridor sketch initiative, corridor studies, and community engagement.

Assist with the development and maintenance the Eastern Region Planning webpage(s) and SharePoint sites. QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, one of the following is required:A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in transportation, planning, engineering, architecture or a related field, OR;An Associate’s degree in one of the above fields and two years’ experience as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent, OR;An Associate’s degree in one of the fields above with one year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent.Additional professional experience may be substituted, year for year, for the required education, provided an Associate degree in one of the related fields has been obtained. In addition to the above requirements, the following are also required:A valid Driver’s License.Work independently and as part of a diverse team and be able to accept and understand instructions.Understand, interpret and apply information contained in WSDOT and supporting manuals.Record information in a usable format.Read and comprehend various highway design and construction documents/plans.Compile data, sketch/draft supporting drawings, and prepare reports.Travel to various locations throughout the state.Operate a computer and use software programs to write reports and analyze data.Communicate both orally and in writing to internal and external customers.Manually and electronically collect, compile, and analyze data, research, interpret, and solve problems.Prepare and review technical reports.Perform fieldwork for the purpose of conducting and or assisting with public surveys and collecting data.Traverse varied surface conditions and work in varied weather conditions.

Important NotesThis is a non-permanent position anticipated to last approximately 12 months.
