Director of Education

This is a Contract position in South Lake Union, WA posted June 1, 2021.

The Director of Education works independently, developing goals and action plans in partnership with the Executive Director and program faculty. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills are needed to navigate highly complex structures within and beyond the University setting. Ability to adjust in a very fast and changing environment with competing deadlines is a must. The position leads a broad educational program consisting of structured learning programs (TL1 trainees, KL2 scholars), lifelong learning programs (professional development for faculty and research teams), and development of regional education (hybrid & distance learning, self-directed online learning). This position will collaborate frequently with other ITHS colleagues as well as external stakeholders at Cancer Research Center, Childrens Hospital, Health Research Institute, Cancer Care Alliance, and other peer academic and research organizations in the region. • Develop and maintain current educational offerings that are: role-based, innovative, and tailored for adult learning needs, including innovative and customizable delivery of educational content based on adult learning principles, and the adoption of these modules by our regional audience to create a highly competent translational workforce throughout the ITHS, WWAMI region, and other CTSAs. • In collaboration with subject matter experts, identify and determine needs of the course and appropriate method of delivery based on what the students or end-users need to learn. • Provide instructional design in development of academically effective, media-rich distance and hybrid programs, courses, modules and any other course materials (e.g. integration of videos, discussion boards, rubrics, quizzes, exercises, scripts, storyboards, simulations, games and web- based training) for undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, and open online course (i.e. MOOC) learners. • Apply research-based learning theories, proven instructional design principles, online learning models, and the best practice guidelines into the course development process. • Support other ITHS programs in meeting their educational aims through consultation, curriculum design, and management of the ITHS education infrastructure (e.g. Living Laboratory, monthly seminars & workshops, annual bootcamps). • Provide leadership to ensure specific aims are met. • Works with the Executive Director, ITHS leadership, and Translational Workforce Development faculty to build on plans for growth, including identifying additional resource needs, writing clear and pragmatic program plans, coordinating implementation and building the required partnerships. • Proactively identifies high-level barriers to education program success and proposes innovative solutions. • Establishes collaborative working relationships with colleagues in the ITHS, at local institutions, in the WWAMI region, and nationally to ensure ample and effective communication among the stakeholders. • Provides timely and useful feedback to the Executive Director, faculty leadership, program staff, and other internal constituencies. • Collaborate with ITHS leadership and other programs to create and adapt educational activities and resources for regional partners. Drives programs and projects to completion by ensuring timelines are met and resources are deployed appropriately through the use of project management tools and methodologies: • Leads the development of project plans, comprehensive reports, and forecasts for all managed projects. • Implement all elements (e.g. videos, discussion boards, rubrics, quizzes, exercises, scripts, storyboards, simulations, games and web- based training) to facilitate distance-based and hybrid learning via the Self-Directed Learning Center. • Supervises staff and provides an interface between faculty members, staff, leadership, and other key stakeholders. • Develops presentations, reports, and e-mails for purposes of providing updates and communications to team members, stakeholders, and senior leadership. • Works closely with other programs and leadership to ensure a strong cohesive team approach across ITHS. • Under guidance of the Manager of Communications, assists in marketing and communication plans to promote education services and activities. • Other duties as assigned. Conduct periodic program evaluation of education activities under guidance of the Director of Evaluation: • Conducts program reviews to ensure quality and timeliness of services and project milestones and assessments of materials based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter experts to engage and educate the target audience on specific topics, ensuring the content matches the objectives. • Works with the ITHS Evaluation Program to assess the overall impact of education programs. • Ensure the appropriate collection of key data, its analysis and implementation of improvement processes. • Explores solutions to delays in meeting established goals or timelines with ITHS Leadership. Works with ITHS leaders to identify and implement solutions. • Be knowledgeable of major regulations, requirements, policies and procedures, and provide advice to ITHS leadership and staff. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Masters Degree in Education or equivalent. • Four years or more of experience in an educational environment. Additional requirements: • Experience in developing educational programs and associated curricula. • Experience managing direct reports and other staff. • Strong analytical skills to solve complex problems and situations. • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies. • Ability to manage demanding workflow and competing deadlines. • Demonstrated skills in team building. • Experience developing and maintaining clear, up to date, well-organized documentation. • Skilled development of reports, graphs, charts, and other visuals as required. • Excellent writing skills. • Skill to efficiently learn new applications.
