Job Title: SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR

Job Description

DESCRIPTION: Directly responsible to the Superintendent and in charge of Federal and State programs that support the educational programming for students with identified special needs such as learning disabilities, home and hospital, 504 and other students with at-risk factors.

Supervises the district nurse, physical therapist, vision specialist, speech therapist and district psychologist to assure coordination of services is delivered to schools Monitors student records/data/IEPs.

Assures compliance of special education programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Personal and Professional Qualifications:
Experience in working effectively with students, including individuals with exceptional needs and/or other special education student populations.

Ability to supervise and/or work cooperatively with regular education teachers, special education teachers, support personnel, ELL staff, school administrators, and parents.

Knowledge of current regulatory/legal statutes regarding special student populations in the state of Washington.

Knowledge of and/or willingness to acquire knowledge of current trends, innovations, and practices in the effective delivery of special education student populations Knowledge and adherence to the policies and regulations of Warden School District.

Education
The Special Education Director will meet all credentialing qualifications established by the State of Washington for this position.

Special Education Endorsement is required.

Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity and respect for others; professional endorsement of exemplary leadership behaviors; cooperative efforts with administrators, instructional staff and parents; and verification of the demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model for students and staff.

Experience in the assessment, diagnosis, and educational intervention of students who may be at risk of academic failure or who are in need of behavioral intervention.

A satisfactory work and attendance record.

Experience
The Special Education Director shall have successful experience and/or training in: Management/administration of educational programs for special student populations (e.g., special education, limited English proficiency, etc.); Working cooperatively with other school administrators, regular program teachers, special education teachers, support personnel, parents, and students to provide effective programs for educating children with special needs; Monitoring for program compliance in regard to state and federal regulations relating to Special Education.

Effectively communicating (orally and in writing) the following: special student population policies and procedures, psycho-educational assessment results, and strategies for correcting childhood learning and/or personal adjustment problems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate a genuine interest, concern, and respect for school-age children; Is a positive and proactive leader who works collaboratively with other administrators toward quality outcomes for students; Communicates effectively with parents to achieve quality outcomes for students; Supervises and evaluates district employed certificated and classified personnel assigned to the special education department as appropriate; Monitors district compliance of state and federal rules and regulations relating to special education.

Monitors the quality of programs for special education student populations; Assists in identification and placement for special education student populations as part of an IEP team; Provides administrative support to district
– and building-level administrators regarding special student populations; Acts as designated special education programs contact person for the district with respect to communication and public relations; Serves as custodian of records for district, including the following: development of policies, procedures, and practices with respect to maintenance and destruction of student records; maintenance and destruction of special education records; and maintenance of the management information system.

Informs district staff of procedures, trends, innovations, and practices for special student populations; Compiles and completes all state mandated applications and reports regarding special education student populations.

Manages and maintains program budgets with the assistance of the Director of Finance; Assists in the development of annual goals and objectives for the IEP as appropriate; Consults with parents and school staff members to assist them in the following: creating and maintaining a functional and positive environment for learning, acquiring knowledge of child development and childhood exceptionalities, and identifying community resources and/or agencies who provide services to children with special needs; Assists and cooperates with school staff members in helping students solve learning and personal adjustment problems; Maintains professional competence through participation in staff development activities; Develops and provides staff development and/or parent education programs.

504 Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by district superintendent.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning.

It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.

The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
